Paulo Freitas and Maria João Marques are architects whose practice is recognised for its work in the preservation, renovation, and enhancement of architectural heritage. Based in Porto, they have collaborated since 1999 and, in 2009, founded Paulo Freitas e Maria João Marques Arquitectos, Lda. 

Over the years, they have developed projects in a number of culturally significant historic buildings, including the Monastery of São Miguel de Refojos, the Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães, the Monastery of Serra do Pilar and the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Their work also includes the collaborative design of the western completion of the Ajuda National Palace. In the field of landscape and archaeological heritage, they have developed the enhancement project for the archaeological site of Castro de Vilarinho dos Galegos.

Their projects are distinguished by a sensitive balance between preservation and contemporary design, fostering renewed connections between communities and their historic places. Their respectful and technically rigorous approach contributes not only to the physical preservation of historic buildings, but also to the enhancement of cultural heritage, the revitalisation of historic urban centres, and the strengthening of collective memory.
